FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

MARCH 21, 2021 | 10:00 AM

WELCOME TO ONLINE WORSHIP AT FIRST CHURCH!

Welcome to all who gather to worship online today! We hope you feel the warmth of God’s presence and welcome right where you’re at. If this if your first time joining us online, we are honored by your presence and hope to see you again soon! To stay informed, please subscribe to our weekly email.

Today's service was made using video from this week's live In-Person Outdoor Worship gathering at First Church's paved parking lot. We invite you to join us in person next Sunday at 10:00 AM (weather permitting) to worship the Lord together!

ABOUT US

First, we’re not just friendly, we’re friends! Our primary belief is that everyone (no exceptions!) is created in the loving image of God, who is love itself.

Second, in everything we do, we strive to live our mission: By the power of Christ, we are blessed to be a blessing!

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP

(the people’s words in bold print)

PRELUDE

"Be Thou My Vision/I Am Thine, O Lord"

(Traditional, arr. Christi Stills)

CALL TO WORSHIP

We worship in the season of Lent,

a time to examine our hearts and our lives
and journey with Christ through the suffering of the world.
Let us seek God with our whole hearts
and treasure God’s word in our spirits.

OPENING HYMN

“As the Deer”

(AS THE DEER)

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Through the season of Lent, O God, we have prayed for clean hearts and right spirits. Forgive us, O Lord, when we have prayed with our words but failed to pray with our actions. Wash us in your mercy; free us to try again. In Christ’s name. Amen.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. This day and always, believe the Good News of the Gospel: in Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Amen!

WE EXPERIENCE GOD’S WORD

SCRIPTURE READING - THE GOSPEL

John 12:20-26

20 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

MESSAGE

"Seeing Jesus … or Not"

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

(from the Patmos Abbey, Order of St. Columba, in Australia)

We believe that our lives are held within the encircling love of God, who knows our names and recognizes our deepest needs. We believe that Christ is the divine Child of the living God, and that his grace is like living waters that can never be exhausted. We believe in the birthing, renewing, enabling Spirit of God who yearns over our welfare as a mother yearns for her child. We believe that God is in the arid desert as well as in green pastures, and that hard times and disciplines are also loving gifts. We believe that our journey has a purpose and a destination, and that our path leads to a glory we cannot yet imagine. We believe that in the church we are fellow pilgrims on the road, and that we are called to love one another as God loves us. This is our faith and we are humbled to profess it in Jesus the Christ. Amen

MUSICAL MEDITATION

“Near the Cross”

(arr. Regi Stone)

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD'S PRAYER

PRAYER RESPONSE

“O Lord, Hear My Prayer”

(HEAR MY PRAYER)

O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer.

When I call, answer me.

O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer.

Come and listen to me.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
