THE 3RD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
JANUARY 24, 2021 | 10:00 AM
WELCOME TO ONLINE WORSHIP AT FIRST CHURCH!
Welcome to all who gather to worship online today! We hope you feel the warmth of God’s presence and welcome right where you’re at. If this if your first time joining us online, we are honored by your presence and hope to see you again soon! To stay informed, please subscribe to our weekly email.
First, we’re not just friendly, we’re friends! Our primary belief is that everyone (no exceptions!) is created in the loving image of God, who is love itself.
Second, in everything we do, we strive to live our mission: By the power of Christ, we are blessed to be a blessing!
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP
(the people’s words in bold print)
PRELUDE + CHIMING OF THE HOUR
“Fantasia sopra Amazing Grace”
CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 62)
For God alone our souls wait; from God comes our salvation.
God alone is our rock and our salvation; our fortress.
Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God.
Steadfast love belongs to God!
On God rests our deliverance and our honor. As we wait, let us worship!
“God of Grace and God of Glory”
CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of grace and glory, our souls wait for you, but we are impatient. We seek after our own way because we are sure that our way is the best and fastest way. Forgive us for impeding your work of grace and glory in our lives. By the presence and power of your Holy Spirit, guide us back to the joy of our salvation, so that we may be confident in the living of these days. Through Christ we pray, Amen.
DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. Be assured that when we choose to follow Christ, we are granted the peace of unmerited forgiveness. Thanks be to God, for in Christ Jesus we are forgiven!
“We are Forgiven”
(TEXT: Trad. liturgical text; MUSIC: Hal H. Hopson)
We are forgiven.
We are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.
Thanks be to God.
WE EXPERIENCE GOD’S WORD
SCRIPTURE READING - THE PSALTER
For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.Selah
Those of low estate are but a breath,
those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
they are together lighter than a breath.
Put no confidence in extortion,
and set no vain hopes on robbery;
if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.
For you repay to all
according to their work.
SCRIPTURE READING - THE GOSPEL
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

“Lord, Make Us More Holy”
(TEXT and MUSIC: African American spiritual)
Lord, make us more holy; Lord, make us more holy;
Lord, make us more holy, until we meet again:
holy, holy, holy, until we meet again.
… Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
