13TH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
AUGUST 30, 2020 | 10:00 AM
WELCOME TO ONLINE WORSHIP AT FIRST CHURCH!
Welcome to all who gather to worship online today! We hope you feel the warmth of God’s presence and welcome right where you’re at. If this if your first time joining us online, we are honored by your presence and hope to see you again soon! To stay informed, please subscribe to our weekly email.
First, we’re not just friendly, we’re friends! Our primary belief is that everyone (no exceptions!) is created in the loving image of God, who is love itself.
Second, in everything we do, we strive to live our mission: By the power of Christ, we are blessed to be a blessing!
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP
(the people’s words in bold print)
“How Majestic Is Your Name”
(MUSIC: M. W. Smith, arr. B. Thoreson)
CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 105)
Give thanks to the Lord, call on God’s name!
We will sing praises to God!
We will tell of God’s wonderful works!
Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
We will seek the Lord and delight in God’s strength!
HYMN OF PRAISE
“How Great Thou Art”
(HOW GREAT THOU ART)
You are great, O God, and our souls sing your praise this day! By the gift of your Holy Spirit, help us to celebrate the presence of Christ among us as we worship you in the beauty of this sacred place, as we delight in your strength and tell of your wonderful works! In the name of Christ our Lord and Savior, Amen!
CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, we confess that our love for you, for your creation, and for others has not been genuine. We have not held fast to what is good, and we have lagged in affection for our brothers and sisters. We have not been patient in suffering, nor have we persevered in prayer. We have repaid evil for evil and have failed to live peaceably with all. Forgive us our sin, and help us trust in the power of your everlasting goodness. Through Christ we pray, Amen.
DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Hear the good news: Christ has broken the power of sin and evil and has opened to us the way of eternal life. With joy I declare to us all: We are forgiven!
Thanks be to God!
WE EXPERIENCE GOD’S WORD
GIFT OF SONG
“Great is Thy Faithfulness”
SCRIPTURE READING - THE EPISTLE LESSON
9 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; 10 love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18 If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Rev. Lisa Martin, Pastor
WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
WE DEPART TO SERVE
“They'll Know We Are Christians by Our Love”
(THEY'LL KNOW WE ARE CHRISTIANS)
BLESSING + BENEDICTION
Genuine love is:
Hating evil, holding fast to what is good,
Loving each other with mutual affection,
Outdoing one another in showing honor,
Not lagging in zeal, being ardent in the spirit,
Serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope,
Being patient in suffering, persevering in prayer, Contributing to the needs of the saints,
Extending hospitality to strangers
May Almighty God, who creates all good, redeems from all evil, and hears all prayer, be with the church around the world, and all people in suffering and hope. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
“Where Could I Go but to the Lord”
